Restoration after a fire can only be dealt with effectively by experts. As well as the obvious structural damage, there may be smoke and soot residues, and problems caused by water and chemicals used by firefighters.

Different types of fires produce different kinds of residue, which permeate the house and require specialist treatment to remove.

If a fire smoulders in an enclosed area like a cupboard, the residue tends to wet and sticky and it gets everywhere.

Certain types of material create protein molecules when they burn, and these molecules cause bad smells and discolouration. They can be absorbed by wallpaper and painted surfaces and need thorough decontamination before redecoration.

PVC burns with an acid smoke, which has to be dealt with quickly to prevent permanent harm.

In fact, speed is essential in the treatment of all kinds of fire damage. Any delay can make the job of restoration much harder. That's why our emergency service is on call 24/7.

And it's vital to use specialists in this kind of work. Inexperienced contractors can fail to achieve 100% decontamination and simply cover up the damaged material. The contamination will eventually resurface, causing unpleasant odours and staining.

People often don't realise that after a fire, all textiles, including clothing, bedding, curtains and upholstery, will almost certainly have to be cleaned to get rid of the smell of smoke.
